Lois Hurd Eckman, age 94, of rural Lake Park, Iowa, died on February 24, 2023, at Accura Healthcare in Milford. Lois was born on July 7, 1928, in McGregor, Minnesota, to Fred and Eva (Berry) Hurd. She grew up in the East Lake, Minnesota, area and attended schools in East Lake and Kimberly.
She was united in marriage to Larry Eckman, Sr in July of 1960. They were the parents of one son, Larry “Toad” Eckman, Jr. in 1961. Lois worked as a bartender at Hilltop Bar, Driftwood Lounge and Del’s Lounge, all in the lakes area. She also cleaned those businesses along with several homes later in life. They owned and operated the White Oaks Campground in Arnolds Park for several years.
Lois loved her family very much and that family always included her pets. Animals were always a part of her life, she fed and cared for any critter that was lucky enough to find their way to her door. She once came out of the grocery store to find a litter of kittens that were left in her truck. They of course found a loving home with her. She rescued several dogs and many, many cats throughout her lifetime.
Lois is survived by her husband of 63 years, her six grandchildren, Bailey, Harley, and Oliver Eckman. Step-grandchildren, Mariah Scherz, Austin Scherz and Danika Frederick along with their mother Lisa Daniels, three great-grandchildren, Ivory Lamoureux, Aleah Scherz and Bee Wever. She also leaves one brother and sister-in-law, Merle & Charlotte Hurd along with many nieces, nephews and friends.
She was preceded in death by her son, her parents, in-laws, brothers Raymond & Donald Hurd, nephews Randy and Bob Hurd, niece Linda Hurd.
A committal service will be held at a later date.
