Harold James “Bud” Benson, age 82 of Harris, Iowa, died Monday, August 7, 2023, at Community Memorial Health Center in Hartley Iowa.
A private family burial will take place Saturday, August 19th, at Ocheyedan Township Cemetery, Ocheyedan, Iowa, and will be followed by a public visitation with family at the Harris Community Center in Harris, from 1:00 – 5:00pm, the same day.
Harold Bud Benson was born October 27, 1940, to Harold Logan Benson and Alice (Thayer) Benson,in Worthington Minnesota, and grew up on his family’s farm near Harris, graduating from Harris Schools in 1959. After school,he worked as a lake patrol officer on the Iowa Great Lakes and later joined the U.S. Navy, in 1963, and served until 1966 with the Navy Seabees and aboard several Ice breakers, including the USS Staten Island and the USS Catawba. He then returned to Iowa and started farming with his father.
Bud was united in marriage November 29th, 1974, to (Evelyn Deutschmann) Jerousek. Retiring from farming in 1995, he spent a few years delivering motor homes all over the country for Morgan Driveaway and later bought a semi as an owner operator and continued his love of the open road! When he came off the road,he drove for D&K Transportation until he fell while rock hunting (another of his hobbies) and became unable to work!
He is survived by 6 sons and a daughter: Todd Schriber of Ponte Verde, Florida; James Jerousek of Harris; Jeffry Stirler (Kristi) of Apple Valley, Minnesota; Joshua Benson(Charity) of Council Bluffs,Iowa; Jonah Benson of Harris; Alexis (Todd) McQuown of Spirit Lake; and Jacob (Brandy) Benson of Lake Park; a brother, Robert (Tanya) Benson of Harrison, Idaho; a sister, Jeri Lemker of Harris; 16 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews and other extended family!
He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Alice and an infant brother .
