Walter Mier, 83, of Spirit Lake passed away on Saturday, July 9, 2022, at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
A funeral service was held on Friday, July 15, 2022, at the Harbor of Joy Lutheran Church in Milford. Visitation was Thursday at the Schuchert-Lentz Funeral Home in Spirit Lake. Walter V. Mier was born on January 23, 1939, to Raymond and Twyla (Zimmerli) Mier in Jackson, MN. He graduated from Jackson High School in 1957. Walter worked in the natural gas industry starting out as a Service Tech and retiring as an Operations Tech. He began his career working for People’s Natural Gas which later became Aquila and is now Black Hills Energy. He was united in marriage to Cheryl Werner on August 2, 1986, in Eagan, MN. In 1999 he received the Extra Mile Award from Spirit Lake Main Sail recognizing his dedication, involvement and positive impact in his community.
Walter was member of the Harbor of Joy Lutheran Church in Milford, the Jaycee’s, Kiwanis, served for 10 years on the Orleans City Council, Gill Netting for the DNR for many years and was a volunteer firefighter for 30 years for the Spirit Lake Fire Department. In his free time, he loved to spend time with his family, traveling, enjoying American history while visiting museums. Walt liked nothing better than visiting with friends and family which is why he was affectionately nicknamed “Gabby”. He had a reserved seat at the round table at the Diner. He will be fondly remembered as the “Jack of Trades, and Master of Most”. He was always fixing or repairing something. Walter was always there to lend a helping hand fixing and remolding homes and repairing cars. He most recently enjoyed his last 6 winters living in Yuma, AZ.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife Cheryl Mier of Spirit Lake; children Todd Mier and his significant other Laurie Brown of Novato, CA; Thomas (Nicole) Mier of Aurelia, IA; Dawn Thomas of Chino Valley, AZ; Ryan (Heather) Miskowic of Estherville, IA; daughter in law Jen Mier of Sioux Falls, SD; grandchildren Alicia, Alex, Brandon, Brock, Jadrien, Cole, Madison and Chloe; great grandchildren Gerard and Posie; siblings Richard Mier of Jackson, MN; Ruth (Pat) Malone of Tucson, AZ; brother in laws Larry Cihak of Trimont, MN and Robert Cassens of Trimont, MN; and sister in law Chiyoko Mier of Boise, ID.
He was preceded in death his parents, son Travis Mier, grandson Elliot Mier, siblings Janice Cihak, Linda Cassens and John Mier.
