Stanley Edward Sherrill, age 94, passed away peacefully in his sleep at a hospice October 26, 2022, in Atlanta (GA) with his son by his side. Stan was born on September 20, 1928, in Keokuk (IA) to Grover C. and Blanche A. (Eid) Sherrill, the fourth of five children. Stan was a long-time teacher and coach in Iowa, serving nearly 25 years in West Bend (IA). He lived in Milford (IA) from 2008-2016, and in Georgia until his passing.
He graduated from Hamilton High School in Hamilton (IL). During his college years, he was the camp ranger at Camp Eastman, a BSA camp located in Nauvoo (IL). He graduated from Southeastern Iowa Community College and continued his education at the University of Illinois, earning a BS in K-9 elementary and physical education in 1963. His teaching/coaching positions were all in Iowa: Mediapolis, Deep River-Millersburg, DMT/Rolfe, Rodman/West Bend, and West Bend-Mallard, where he was on the teaching/coaching staff from 1969-1991. Many West Bend-area youth went through his junior high science classes and/or played HS girls’ basketball or volleyball under his coaching. While teaching at the Rodman School, Stan planted numerous trees on the school grounds. He was awarded the Palo Alto Conservation Award for his efforts.
Stan was also an avid Hawkeye fan! He will be remembered for his love of playing cards, bidding at local auctions, his many building projects, hunting and fishing activities, and finding treasures for other people. He had a deep love and respect for science, nature, and the out-of-doors. For decades Stan and Donna also sold antiques in the original Antique Building at the Clay County Fair in Spencer and were familiar faces at Vick’s Corner (Antique Flea Markets) in Spirit Lake. Stan was a member of the Catholic Church.
On June 24, 1954, Stan married Donnalee Samuels in Keokuk. Donna passed away in March 2009. He is survived by his children: Theresa (Steve) Reiter of Wichita (KS); Tina Sherrill-Range (Kevin Range) of Milford; Trudy (Bob) West of New Braunfels (TX); and Tim Sherrill of Mableton (GA). Also surviving Stan are eight grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
A Celebration of Life Mass/Service for Stan will be held at 10:30am at Divine Mercy Catholic Parish – Saints Peter and Paul’s Church in West Bend on Thursday, November 17, 2022. Family will be available for visitation at the church (206 N. Broadway Avenue, West Bend) from 9-10:30am prior to mass. On Saturday, November 19, a visitation will be held at Printy Funeral Home in Hamilton (IL) followed by a gravesite ceremony in Oakwood Cemetery in Hamilton.
