Mark was born on May 1, 1959, to Robert and Beverly (Franklin) Bergquist in Spirit Lake, Iowa. He graduated from Spirit Lake High School and went on to further his education at Iowa State University and earned his associates degree in Engineering from Iowa Lakes Community College. Mark and his wife, Roberta Berte were married on July 6, 1985, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. Together they raised four sons, Maxwell, Sydney, Mason, and Weston. This was a golden time of his life centered around his boys and supporting their sports endeavors through coaching, umpiring, and providing priceless words of wisdom.

A man of many interests, he thrived on fishing trips to South Dakota and deer hunting with friends but also enjoyed reading and Sundays at church. He attended sprint car races as often as possible, perhaps relishing his glory days of dirt bike racing, and spent countless hours tinkering in the garage on motorcycles and cars. Where Mark shined was with a tool in hand and a project ahead. A kind, generous, and patient man, he was always eager to help whether it be a friend, neighbor, or stranger.

Mark found success in many avenues throughout his life including drafting for Citation Homes, farming with dear friends, and truck driving which took him all over the country but perhaps his greatest achievement was the community of family and friends he built around himself. A loving husband and father, amazing grandpa, pillar of his church, and many would say the kind of friend most only hope to find in their lifetime. To be teased by Mark was to be loved by him and from coast to coast he always made a point to keep in touch with those he met along the way.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife Roberta Bergquist of Spirit Lake; four sons, Maxwell and his son Bremer of Spirit Lake; Sydney of Eagen, MN; Mason (Samantha) and their children Aiden, Ella, and Mia of Milford; and Weston of Iowa City, Iowa; mother Beverly Bergquist of Spirit Lake; sister Mary (Toby) Tobbler of Chicago, IL; brother Peter (Julie) Bergquist of Spirit Lake; niece Rachel (Paul) Johnson and their children Zadie, Kenzie and Huxley of Windom, MN; father-in-law Ernest Berte of Milford; step-father-in-law Richard Thompson of Ledyard, IA; and brother-in-law Tony (Susan) Berte of Lakota, IA.
