A memorial service for Lyla A. Evans, age 84, of Spirit Lake, IA, formerly of Fairmont, MN, will be 2:00 p.m. on Friday, May 31, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Fairmont. Visitation will be two hours prior to the service, beginning at 12:00 p.m.,at the church. Lyla passed away on Wednesday morning, May 22, 2024, at her home in Spirit Lake. The Lakeview Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Fairmont is assisting the family with arrangements.
Lyla Ann (Wachal) Evans was born on December 28, 1939, in Jackson, MN. She was the daughter of Edward and LaVonne (Armstrong) Wachal. She was baptized as an infant and was later confirmed in her youth in Jackson. Lyla attended Jackson public schools and graduated from Jackson High School in 1957.
On April 22, 1968, Lyla was united in marriage to William “Bill” Evans in Sioux Falls, SD. The couple resided in Fairmont where they owned and operated Fair Mall Service until they sold the business in 2001. Lyla worked as an office manager at Krueger Realty.
Lyla was a long-time member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Fairmont as well as the Lee C. Prentice American Legion Post 36 Auxiliary. During her free time, she enjoyed working on stained glass, sewing, baking banana bread, and spending time at the lake house in Spirit Lake. More recently, Lyla loved traveling to a warmer climate in the winters with her fiancé, Don Matuska,as well as living life at the lake house.
Left to cherish her memory include her fiancé, Don Matuska,of Beloit, WI; children, Lee Evans and his wife, Jackie, of Coon Rapids, MN;Layne Evans and his husband, Eddie Zapata, of Minneapolis, MN; and Lon Evans of Fairmont, MN; honorary children, Tom and Jeanne Krahmer of Harlingen, TX; grandchildren, Adam Emberland, Jake Rasmussen, Zach Rasmussen and his wife, Trista, Annie Sue Rasmussen, and Lily Evans; honorary grandchildren, Rebecca Hartung, and Shawn Hartung; great-grandchildren, Jaxson Rasmussen, Tatum Rasmussen, and Rowen Staricha; brother, Ken Wachal and his wife, Marilyn, of Scio, OR; sister-in-law, Valarie Holm of Dunnell, MN; nieces, Dawn Haug and her husband, Jim, of Idaho, and Darla Lundgren and her husband, Dexter, of Estherville, IA; extended Holm and Larson family members; Tom and Vicky Matuska; and very special friends, Mavis Tonne, and Illa Byers; many other relatives and friends.
