Lois Newman (Long, Ross) of Alta, Iowa, formerly of Spirit Lake, Iowa, the daughter of Bernard and Ruth Long (Robbins, Dailey) passed away Saturday morning, December 23rd, 2023, at the St. Luke’s Hospital in Sioux City, Iowa, at the age of 73.
A Celebration of Life will be on Saturday, February 3rd, 2024, from Noon – 3:00pm, at the Legion in Milford, Iowa. Lois was first and foremost a loving mother of four. They spent a great deal of time together as she was raising them teaching them how to cook, bake as well as many other necessary skills they would need later in life. While raising the kids, she also worked at the Coke Plant in the Office, Dinner Date and the Near New Shoppe. In 1987, Lois and the kids moved to Alta, Iowa, where Lois would pursue her longtime goal of becoming a Beautician by attending Faust Institute of Cosmetology in Storm Lake, Iowa. After graduation she opened up her own business, Lookin’ Just Right Beauty Shop, in the back of her home for nearly thirty years. In 1996, on November 30th, Lois married Dean Newman and they celebrated nearly 30 glorious years together. Lois loved cats and dogs and was always willing to take in a stray and try to help find its forever home, in addition to her longtime dog, Barney & cat Jenny. She also loved to sew whether it was a clothing repair, quilt or the pet beds that she was so fond of making. Lois had many friends in the lakes area but made many more in the Alta area with her husband Dean over the past 30 plus years. Many of them from their favorite hangouts, the Olive Branch in Alta, Dinner Date & the Bakery in Storm Lake.
She was preceded in death by her Father: Bernard Long and Mother: Ruth Long (Robbins, Dailey).
Left to cherish her memory is her husband, Dean Newman of Alta, Iowa; brother, Michael & (Carla) Long of Newnan, Georgia; son, Michael and (Autumn) Ross of Spirit Lake, Iowa; son, Ryan Ross of Milford, Iowa; daughter, Erin & (Kris) Sundall of Milford, Iowa; son, Andrew & (Cara) Ross of Washta, Iowa; niece, Lora Ellis of Middleton, Wisconsin; grandchildren, Jade Hanson of Indianola, Iowa and Trevor Ross of Washta, Iowa; Alex & (Kari) Menefee of Emmetsburg, Iowa; Hunter Menefee of Zimmerman, Minnesota; Justine & (Whitey) Pierce of Odebolt, Iowa; Three Great Grandchildren; Dean’s Daughters: Linda, Lori, Tammy & Patti.
