Evelyn R. Lucken passed away on Thursday, July 11, 2024. She was born in rural Minnesota on May 15, 1931, to Ida Pater Stanton and Victor V. Stanton. She is survived by three children, Pamela S. Lucken (Mike), Sebring, FL, Thomas J. Lucken (Chun), Vandalia, IL, and James A. Lucken (Debbie), Wildwood, MO; five grandchildren, John (Anna), Jeffrey, Matthew, and Andrew Lucken, and Katherine Lucken Poetz (Brian); and one great-grandchild, Violet Lucken; also survived by two brothers-in-law, Dean Hummel and Ronald Lucken, and a number of nieces and nephews; she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert E. Lucken; her parents and her mother’s second husband, Edward McMahon; her sister, Elayne Hummel; and several brothers- and sisters-in law.
She spent most of her childhood in Spirit Lake, IA. After high school, she attended Iowa State Teachers College (now University of Northern Iowa) in Cedar Falls, IA. She taught in Iowa elementary schools, including one in Spirit Lake. She married Robert E. Lucken, a newspaper reporter and editor, in 1953, and continued to reside in Spirit Lake.
In 1954, the couple moved to Rock Island, IL, and Evelyn taught in a Davenport, IA, elementary school. In 1967, the couple moved to St. Louis, MO. Evelyn continued her education and was a substitute teacher while her children were growing up. She later resumed a full-time position at Parker Road School in the Ferguson-Florissant School District where she continued teaching until her retirement in 1991.
Evelyn loved being with family and friends. She had a great sense of humor, and she was a joy to be around. She was an avid golfer and bridge player, and she sang in the UMSL Community Choir. She loved visiting the Lake of the Ozarks every chance she had.
Evelyn was involved in activities at John Knox Presbyterian Church in Florissant, MO, where she had been a Deacon, an Elder, and taught Sunday School. She was an Oasis tutor in the Ferguson-Florissant School District for 10 years after retiring. She was a member of Alpha Delta Kappa educational sorority. In 2014, she joined Bonhomme Presbyterian Church in Chesterfield, MO, where she was active in the Women’s Bible Study.
