Evelene Ann Maas, daughter of Gustaf and Mabel (Whitford) Hanson, was born in Ruthven, Iowa, on September 1, 1935. She passed away at her home in Spencer, Iowa, surrounded by her family on January 10, 2024, at the age of 88 years.
Evy attended and graduated from Lake Center Township School in rural Clay County, Iowa. She then attended business college in Mankato, Minnesota. On June 10, 1956, she was united in marriage to Harlan “Speed” Maas. The couple made their home in Terril, before moving to Waterloo for 17 years. The couple then moved to Mountain Home, Arkansas where, they stayed for 22 years before moving back to Terril and most recently to Spencer. Speed passed away on September 26, 2022; Evy continued to live in their home in Spencer until her death.
Evy worked as an insurance biller at the Baxter Regional Hospital for many years. Evy and Speed were involved with the plays at the Community Play House in Mountain Home, Arkansas. Evy directed and Speed acted. Evy was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church of Terril. She enjoyed crocheting, reading and being on the computer. Evy loved spending time with her grandchildren; throughout the years she and Speed took each grandchild on a vacation. Buddy, her dog, was by her side and companion, through everything.
Evy is survived by her children: Darilyn (Craig) Larsen, Sioux Falls, South Dakota; Jenelle (Jeff) Vobr, Pelkie, Michigan; and Ryan (Melissa) Maas, Floral, Arkansas; six grandchildren: Hannah Larsen, Sean (Ashley) Larsen, and Jill Larsen and Kimberly (Ron) Shelton, Sara (Beau) Langland, and Tyler Vobr; and eight great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, sisters R. Arlene Jacobsen and Pauline Fitch, and brothers Wayne G. Hanson and Gary Hanson.
