Burton Tungland, 89, of Spirit Lake, passed away on December 22, 2020, at Accura Healthcare Center of Spirit Lake, with complications from Covid.
A private family graveside service for Burton will be held in the Superior Cemetery, Superior, Iowa. Arrangements are under the direction of the Schuchert-Lentz Funeral Home in Spirit Lake. Online condolences may be left at www.spiritlakefuneralhome.com.
Burton was born on March 29, 1931, the son of Amos and Edith (Hansen) Tungland in Jackson, Minnesota. He attended school in Jackson, but never graduated. Burt was raised by Jimmy and Hazel Miller of Spirit Lake and southern Iowa. He got his love for horses from Jimmy and continued this love throughout his life. Burt enlisted in the US Air Force in 1951, serving his country as a Paratrooper. He was united in marriage to Deloris Shepard on August 26, 1952,in Spirit Lake. He returned to the service where he continued to serve until 1954 when he was honorably discharged.
Burton was always self-employed, owning, and operating Tungland Tree Service, driving over the road some for Holiday Express and Sather Cookie Company until his early retirement in 1989. In retirement he gave his heart, soul and passion to tending to and raising horses. Burt spent his years in the Black Hills and Apache Junction, Arizona,with his horses.
He is survived by his son Terry (Mary) Tungland of Spirit Lake; two grandsons Jesse (Cheri) Tungland of Spirit Lake; Cody (Sarah) Tungland of Milford; great-grandchildren Tyler, Taylor, Cole and Kade; brother Denny Tungland of Spirit Lake; sister Roberta Miles of Santa Rosa, CA and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, stepparents, wife Deloris, and his daughter Tammy.
