Bernard James Von Ehwegen

Bernard James Von Ehwegen was born at home in Nemaha, Iowa, on February 1, 1942, to Reinhardt and Bessie (Bogue) Von Ehwegen. Bernie died on March 6, 2022, at St. Luke’s Nursing Home in Spencer, Iowa, at the age of 80.

Bernie moved with his family in 1949 to the Terril area. He attended and graduated from Terril High School in 1960. While in school he met his future wife Roxie Sidles, the couple was wed on June 24, 1962, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Terril. Bernie worked for area gas stations, before beginning his career with the Terril Elevator. He began working on the construction side, he then worked on the grain side and finished his career driving the gas truck. Bernie was employed full time at the elevator for 43 years, after retiring he continued to work there for another 10 years on a part-time basis. Bernie was a member of the National Guard for many years and served on the American Legion Honor Guard.

Bernie was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Terril. Bernie truly loved the Lord. He enjoyed spending time at the Seed Shed with friends, sharing coffee and stories. He could be seen driving around Terril on many days. Bernie was always happy and quite the jokester; he would always tease you; if he liked you. The family enjoyed taking trips to the best camping spot at Emerson Bay. He enjoyed boating and helping Roxie in the garden as well. In his later days he enjoyed singing and whistling, some of his favorite songs were the Auctioneer Song and his special song for Roxie “I love you Lord, Jesus.” The most important thing to Bernie was his family.

Bernie is survived by his wife Roxie of Spencer; his sons Mark (Shirley) Von Ehwegen of Milford and Tim (Jennifer) Von Ehwegen of Spencer; his grandchildren Alex Von Ehwegen, Derrick Von Ehwegen, Haley (Ryan) Marsh, Holly Von Ehwegen, Tate Von Ehwegen, and Jetta Von Ehwegen;  and great-grandchildren Willow and Ellie Marsh. He is also survived by his brothers Don (Glenda) Von Ehwegen and Jerry Von Ehwegen and sister-in-law Betty Von Ehwegen.

Bernie was preceded in death by his parents, his infant son Rodney James Von Ehwegen, his brother Duane Von Ehwegen, and sister-in-law Carolyn Von Ehwegen.
