A funeral service for Arlo Newman, 96, of Milford, Iowa, was held Saturday, August 10, 2024, at First Lutheran Church in West Okoboji. Interment was at Westport Cemetery.
Arlo Wayne Newman was born on March 17, 1928, in Comfrey, Minnesota, to Raymond and Vernetta (Pelley) Newman. He lived on various farms west of Milford. He attended Westport School #5 and graduated from Okoboji Consolidated High School in 1945. During his high school years as a proud Okoboji Oriole, he played basketball and baseball.
On December 27, 1949, he married Betty Hansen of Terril and began farming east of Milford. To this union four children were born – Duane, Roger, Donna and Kay. They later divorced.
On November 27, 1974, he married Bonnie Sandersfeld of Hartley and helped to raise her children – Cary, Brian and Denise. They lived at Business Corner, Hartley,and the Crescent Beach area before divorcing. He then lived in Lake Park.
Besides farming, Arlo worked at Shoppers Supply and Eaton Corporation until retirement. He then worked at Village West, Halbur Lawn Service and as a Walmart greeter until his second retirement. His favorite, by far, was being a farmer.
Arlo served on various boards including the C-D Farm Service and Federal Land Bank Boards. He was a 4-H leader and a member of First Lutheran Church of Milford. He played fast-pitch softball and enjoyed watching sports, especially the Minnesota Timberwolves, Minnesota Lynx and college basketball. Fudge Stripe cookies and Cheetos were his favorites.
Arlo passed away on August 7, 2024, at Accura Healthcare of Milford.
Always loving a good joke, family and friends appreciated his quick wit and sense of humor. He had a strong faith and a sincere appreciation for the nurses and staff at Accura Healthcare of Milford.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Duane Grant Newman; grandson, Michael Newman and grandson-in-law, Russell Ramsey.
Left to cherish his memory are sons: Duane (Connie) Newman of Milford, Iowa; Roger (Cheryl) Newman of Mountain Home, Arkansas; daughters: Donna (VerDon) Schmidt of Everly, Iowa and Kay (Todd) Suhr of Grimes, Iowa. Step-children: Cary Sandersfeld of May City, Iowa; Brian Sandersfeld of Montgomery, Iowa and Denise Seivert of Hartley, Iowa.
Nine grandchildren: Crystal (Danny Johnson) Ramsey, Darci (Jared) Domerese, Travis Suhr, Nicole (Jess) McCall, Asa Sandersfeld, Ethan Sandersfeld, Justyn (Marissa) Sandersfeld, Brooke (Nathan) Peters, and Blake (Kim) Seivert. Also surviving are six great-grandchildren, one great-great granddaughter and a “special” daughter, Lonna (Brian) Draayer of Milford, Iowa, as well as other relatives and friends.
